Connecting and Printng to Xerox Printers

Printing to SILS Xerox Printers

Printing from a Windows Computer

Connecting from SILS Computer Lab Windows computer
Installing PaperCut Client

You only have to install the PaperCut Client on your computer once. Once you have installed it, you can skip this procedure next time. Note: if you are using a computer on the domain, you can download the PaperCut client through Software Center App instead of following the steps below.

  1. Click on the Start button or open File Explorer or press the Windows key
  2. Type \\sils-pelican and press enter
  3. Double-click on the "PCClient" folder
  4. Double-click on the folder named "win"
  5. Double-click on "client-local-install.exe" to install the PaperCut client
Connecting to a Printer
  1. Click on the Start button or open File Explorer or press the Windows key
  2. Type \\sils-pelican and press enter
  3. Double-click on the printer you want to add (see above table for printer names, locations, and prices)
  4. Once the driver installs (this can take 1-2 minutes), the printer should be available to select from any application's print menu
Connecting from your Personal Windows Computer
Installing PaperCut Client

You only have to install the PaperCut Client on your computer once. Once you have installed it, you can skip this procedure next time.

  1. Click on the Start button or open File Explorer or press the Windows key
  2. Type \\sils-pelican.ad.unc.edu and press enter
  3. When prompted for credentials, enter:
        username: ad\your-onyen
        password: your onyen password
    Note: Do not have Windows remember your onyen password; otherwise, it may lock you out the next time you change it.
  4. Double-click on the "PCClient" folder
  5. Double-click on the folder named "win"
  6. Double-click on "client-local-install.exe" to install the PaperCut client
Connecting to a Printer

Printing from a Windows Computer (either a SILS Computer Lab computer or your own computer)

Note:​

  • By default the printer will print double-sided unless you change the settings.
  • Xerox printers with BW in the name will force black and white printing for systems printing from Windows.
  1. Navigate to the print menu in the application you are using.
  2. Select the desired Xerox printer (see above table). If the printer you want to use is not listed, go back through the above steps to connect to the printer.
  3. If prompted for a username or authentication needed use your onyen credentials (Occasionally, AD\Onyen format is needed)

Printing from a MacOS Computer

Connecting from OSX using JAMF(University Owned Laptops)
  1. Open the JAMF Self Service application 
  2. Click the Install button under SILS Xerox Printers and Software. This will install the PaperCut client and all of the drivers you will need to print from any Xerox printer in Manning Hall.
  3. Once the banner appears notifying you that the installation has completed, the printer should be available to select from any application's print menu. 
Connecting to Printers from OSX(Non-Jamf, personal laptops)
  1. Install the printer driver from the SILS Apps folder
    1. Open a web browser
    2. Navigate to https://adminliveunc.sharepoint.com/:u:/r/sites/sils/APPS/Shared%20Documents/Printer_Drivers/OSX/Xerox/XeroxPrintDriver_5.3.0_2118.dmg?csf=1&e=Y2Cfth
    3. If prompted to log in, use onyen@ad.unc.edu and onyen password. Driver download will begin after.
    4. Once downloaded, click on the driver to install.
  2. From the System Preferences menu, select Printer & Scanners
  3. Click the plus sign to begin adding the new printer
  4. Click the gear-shaped Advanced icon in the toolbar. If you don't see an Advanced icon:
    1. Hold down the control key and click the grey area around the icons and search bar
    2. Click Customize...
    3. Drag the Advanced icon onto the toolbar
    4. Click Done to return to the Add menu
  5. Click the Advanced icon.
  6. From the Type drop-down, select Windows printer via spoolss.
  7. In the URL box, enter smb://SILS-Pelican.ad.unc.edu/PrinterName (replace PrinterName with actual printer name)
  8. In the Name box, enter the name you'd like displayed in your computer's printer list.
  9. From the Use dropdown, select Select Software... and scroll to the correct driver. The example below shows proper setup for the printer SILS_Xerox-2nd-Floor.

  1. Click Add. Once you have clicked Add, the installation will show a pop-up that says Setting up 'PrinterName'. Click Configure to continue installation.

  1. Your printer should now be installed and accessible from any print menu. You may be prompted for a password when you print. If so, use your onyen login.
Printing from OSX
  1. Select the desired Xerox printer (see above table for printer names, locations, and prices)
  2. If prompted for a username or authentication needed use your onyen credentials (Occasionally, AD\Onyen format is needed)
  3. If the print job fails without a quota error or is stuck authenticating, check that your keychain is not storing old onyen credentials.

Printing Using the Web Print Portal

Web Print Portal Overview

You can print from the Web Print portal from a web browser in any operating system by following the link (https://sils-pelican.ad.unc.edu:9192/user?) and logging in with your Onyen credentials. The Web Print portal shows you a summary of your printing activity, including the balance of your quota, the number of jobs and pages you have printed, and the environmental impact of your printing. Use the menu on the left-hand side to view:

  • Printing rates for each printer
  • Your transaction history
  • Your recent print jobs
  • Your pending print jobs
Printing via Web Print
  1. Log in to the Web Print portal using your Onyen credentials.
  2. Select Web Print from the side menu.
  3. Click "Submit a Job."
  4. Select which printer you would like to print to.
  5. Click "Print Options and Account Selection."
  6. Select the appropriate options and accounts (if applicable) for your print job.
  7. Click "Upload Documents."
  8. Upload the files you would like to print. Web Print accepts only the following file types: pdf, bmp, dib, gif, jfif, jif, jpe, jpeg, jpg, png, tif, tiff
  9. Click "Upload & Complete." This will send your documents to the printer.
  10. Once your print job is submitted, Web Print will show you the status of the job.

Printing to a Shared Account (Grants, Student Groups, etc.)

Printing with a Shared Account
  1. Ensure you have the Papercut Client installed (Available through \\SILS-Pelican\PCClient). See instructions above for installing the client.
  2. By default all users charge automatically to their personal account. If you have the client installed and don't see the option to print to a shared account, contact the SILS IT Help Desk.
  3. When selecting options for your print job, select the appropriate account in the print dialogue

Notes:

  • Shared account printing is also available through Web Print​
  • If you are attempting to print with a shared account and your print jobs disappear without printing, be sure you have the PaperCut client open before submitting the print job.
