The Customer-Focused Library catalog link

Public libraries aren't just libraries anymore. Increasingly, they have become Internet cafes, music stores, movie stores, study halls, and more. How do libraries embrace these changes and still provide the resources - and the resource-gathering environment - today's patrons want? This book answers these questions by proposing a transformative alternative - a reimagined library in which the collections, the services, even the building itself, reflects the customer's perspective.

Fool's Gold catalog link

Herring, who is dean of library services at Dacus Library Winthrop U. (Rock Hill, South Carolina) has written a chilling work laying out how the abrupt and significant decline in reading can be linked to the concurrent rise of the electronic media. Herring concludes that if so few young people now know how to read well or consider reading books part of their daily lives, the future of books and libraries that contain books (as opposed to computers and other non-print media) is endangered. To support his argument, copyright laws and controversies, American K-12 reading methods, and current library development policies are discussed in detail.

These vibrant snapshots bring to life the poignancy, the humor, and the mystery of living, as Eisner says, "on the block."

Donalyn Miller is a dedicated teacher who says she has yet to meet a child she couldn't turn into a reader. In The Book Whisperer, Miller takes us inside her 6th grade classroom to reveal the secrets of her powerful but unusual instructional approach. Rejecting book reports, comprehension worksheets, and other aspects of conventional instruction, Miller embraces giving students an individual choice in what they read combined with a program for independent reading. She also focuses on building a classroom library of high-interest books, and above all in modeling appropriate and authentic reading behaviors. Her zeal for reading is infectious and inspiring, and the results speak for themselves. No matter how far behind Miller's students may be when they start out, they end up reading an average of 40 books per year, achieve high scores on standardized tests, and internalize a love for reading that lasts long after they've left her class.

Meet Boilerplate, the world’s first robot soldier—not in a present-day military lab or a science-fiction movie, but in the past, during one of the most fascinating periods of U.S. history. Designed by Professor Archibald Campion in 1893 as a prototype, the self-proclaimed purpose of the robot was “preventing the deaths of men in the conflicts of nations.” You say you’ve never heard of Boilerplate before? That’s because this book is the fanciful creation of a husband and-wife team who have richly imagined these characters and inserted them into accurate retellings of history. This full-color chronicle is profusely illustrated with graphics mimicking period style, including photos, paintings, posters, cartoons, maps, and even stereoscope cards. Part Jules Verne and part Zelig,it’s a great volume for a broad range of fans of science fiction, history, and robots.

When he dies, Raisel finds work in the home of a rabbi. His jealous cook makes Raisel toil from sunup to sundown. And as the Jewish holiday of Purim approaches, Raisel works even harder. The rabbi's son presides over the Purim dinner, and Raisel listens closely when he responds to riddles posed by his guests. Is it possible that this young man can answer Raisel's riddle? Erica Silverman's lively retelling of the Cinderella story features a heroine for whom knowledge is as essential to happiness as love. In striking paintings, Susan Gaber captures all her beauty, external and internal.
