The Alumni Association is planning some very special events for Friday, September 29, and would like to invite you to participate.
Each year the Alumni Association hosts a special Alumni Day event. For our Alumni Day celebration this year we are coordinating a student mentoring day. Over the past few weeks we have solicited local library and information science professionals who have volunteered to host a student in their workplace on Friday morning, September 29.
The morning will provide an opportunity for students to experience first hand the daily operations of a working library or information organization environment, after which the volunteer host and the student will continue their discussions over lunch.

In the afternoon, at 3 p.m., SILS will hold a ceremony to recognize all the past and the current associate deans of the school. Everyone, including students and volunteer hosts, is invited to attend this event which will be held in the Pleasants Family Assembly Room of Wilson Library. UNC's new chancellor, James Moeser, will be a guest speaker, and the Alumni Association will present the Distinguished Alumni Awards for 2000.
Immediately following the ceremony there will be a reception in the lobby of Wilson Library to honor the associate deans and to welcome all new and returning students to SILS.
So how can you participate in the Student Mentoring Day? All students who are interested in visiting a local library or information worksite should sign up through Marcia Tauber in the SILS office.
All you need to do is send an e-mail to her at firstname.lastname@example.org. Give her your name, your e-mail address, your phone number, and your area of interest if you have one (e.g. cataloging, special libraries, reference, networking, web development, etc.) If you don't have a particular area of interest, just let us know if you prefer to be matched with a library science or an information science professional.
Also, please let us know if you absolutely cannot travel to a worksite off campus. We have a few volunteers from campus as well as many who are located nearby.
The Alumni Association will match up students with volunteer hosts, and on or about September 15 we will send an email of introduction to each pair of participants. The volunteer hosts will contact the students to make individual arrangements for the day. If you would like to participate but cannot do so on September 29, we may be able to accommodate your schedule.
We have at least one volunteer who would like to host a student but cannot do so on the selected date and has proposed some alternate dates. Please let us know if you would be interested in participating on a different date.
