The School of Information and Library Science (SILS) will welcome Dr. Ryan Shaw, who will join the faculty as assistant professor on January 1, 2011.
Shaw comes to SILS from the University of California, Berkeley where he received his Ph.D. in Information Management and Systems with a Designated Emphasis in New Media at the School of Information. The title of his dissertation was, "Events and Periods as Concepts for Organizing Historical Knowledge."
“We are delighted that Ryan is joining our faculty,” said Dr. Gary Marchionini, dean of SILS and Cary C. Boshamer Distinguished Professor. “His background in digital technologies and social media will be well received by our students and faculty. He brings a new perspective and great experiences to the school.”
Shaw studied symbolic systems at Stanford as an undergraduate, and then worked for five years in Tokyo, Japan, as a software developer before returning to graduate school in 2003. From 2005 to 2007 he worked at Yahoo! Research Berkeley, where he invented social media and mobile media technology that enabled people to create, describe, find, share and remix media on the Web. He currently is working with the Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative to develop new kinds of digital tools for humanities scholars. He has also been involved in a number of new media arts projects, most recently developing the software for The Builders Association's production Continuous City.
Shaw earned his master's degree in information management and systems at the University of California, Berkeley's School of Information Management and Systems, Berkeley, CA. He has a bachelor of science degree in symbolic systems, rationality concentration from Stanford University.
