On Sunday, Dec. 16th, the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) will conduct its Fall commencement ceremony and celebration for students who have completed their degree requirements.
The SILS ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. in the Pleasants Family Assembly Room of the Louis Round Wilson Library. All members of the SILS community, and especially all graduating students and any friends and family they'd like to have join them, are invited to attend.
Joan Lippincott, associate executive director of the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), will be the guest speaker for the commencement ceremony. CNI is a joint program of the Association of Research Libraries (ACRL) and EDUCAUSE. Lippincott is a widely published author and frequent conference speaker. She is chair of the ACRL New Publications committee and is on the boards of portal, The Reference Librarian and the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD). She serves on the Advisory Boards of the Horizon Report, the EDUCAUSE ELI Seeking Evidence of Impact project, the Journal of Learning Spaces and the Academic Commons. Prior to joining CNI, Lippincott was a librarian at Cornell University, Georgetown University, George Washington University and SUNY Brockport. She received her Ph.D. in higher education from the University of Maryland, an M.L.S. from SUNY Geneseo and an A.B. from Vassar College.
Students: Arrive in the lobby of Wilson Library no later than 9:15 a.m.
Faculty: Assemble in the lobby of the Wilson Library at 9:30 a.m.
Guests: Proceed directly to the Wilson Library and be seated prior to the beginning of the ceremony.
Students and Faculty: A group photo will be taken on the steps of the Wilson Library immediately following the ceremony.
A reception will follow the ceremony in the lobby of the Wilson Library.
The school has a small number of caps, gowns and hoods available from previous commencement ceremonies that may be borrowed. Contact the SILS Dean's Office at 919-962-8366 beginning Monday, Dec. 3rd if you would like to borrow any of these items.

There is parking at the Morehead Planetarium lot on Franklin St. as well as various locations on the UNC campus not marked as 24 hour reserved spaces.
University Commencement Activities
SILS students are encouraged to participate in the University ceremony, which will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16th, in the Dean E. Smith Center. The Fall commencement speaker is Myron S. Cohen, M.D., an acclaimed physician and researcher who has spent the last three decades studying the transmission and prevention of HIV/AIDS.
