Reminder - SILS students invited to apply for international scholarships

January 9, 2013

GREAT NEWS! Baker & Taylor, a leading worldwide distributor of books, video, music and games, will offer scholarships for the School of Information and Library Science International Summer Seminars to London, England and Prague, Czech Republic. Two lucky SILS graduate students will be selected for the two-week seminars; one student will go to London, the other student will visit Prague. Because of the generosity of Baker & Taylor, in addition to the summer seminars to London and Prague, later this semester, another student will be selected for a scholarship to the middle east.  All School of Information and Library Science graduate students who are enrolled at the time of the seminars are invited to apply (eligible students are those who are enrolled through the summer and beyond).

Each scholarship to London and Prague covers the registration fees (housing - shared accommodation, instruction and some meals - either $3,750 and $3,950), a $350 fee for academic credit, plus an $850 stipend that may be used to defray the cost of air fare, in-country travel or ground transportation-a terrific value!

The 2013 London Summer Seminar, "British Libraries and Librarianship: Past, Present and Future," is a partnership with University College London that will be held from May 19th to June 1st, 2013. Details of the many planned activities, accommodations and more can be accessed at: http://sils.unc.edu/programs/international/london

The 2013 Prague Summer Seminar, "Libraries and Librarianship in the Czech Republic," is organized in conjunction with Charles University, central Europe's oldest university. It will also be held May 19th to June 1st, 2013. For more information, visit: http://sils.unc.edu/programs/international/prague

To be considered for the award, please submit your application to Prague or London to Kaitlyn Murphy in the SILS administrative office by February 1, 2013 at 5:00 p.m.  Those qualified may apply for one or both of the scholarships.

More information about the Baker & Taylor scholarship to the middle east will be announced as soon as it's available.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Kaitlyn via e-mail at kaitlynm@email.unc.edu or call 919.962.0208.

NOTE: Those selected must be able to pay for airfare and ground transportation to and from the airport. The $850 stipend may be used for these purposes. The recipient of the scholarship will attend classes held during the seminar, and  fulfill all the academic requirements for earning credit for the seminar including writing the seminar paper.  The scholarship recipient is expected  to write an additional five-page  paper (in consultation with the SILS  faculty member who accompanied the seminar).  Additionally, the students selected for the scholarships will visit Baker & Taylor in Charlotte, NC (typically in the fall) where they will tour the corporate headquarters and present their second papers.

This international travel is an incredible opportunity. Be sure to get your application in by the deadline.

Good luck!
