Alumnus Ed Sheary named North Carolina Library Director of the Year

Ed ShearyEd Sheary (MSLS ‘77), an alumnus of the School of Information and Library Science (SILS), was recently named Library Director of the Year for 2011 by the North Carolina Public Libraries Directors Association (NCPLDA).

Sheary is the director of public libraries in Buncombe County in western North Carolina, which encompasses Asheville and its surroundings. Having been a director of public libraries in North Carolina since 1981, Sheary has been Buncombe County Library Director since 1990.

Sheary has worked for his entire career to develop public libraries in North Carolina, ensuring that libraries under his supervision function as community centers and sites for information access and social services.

The award from the NCPLDA particularly recognizes his management of the $3.3 million renovation of the Pack Memorial Library in downtown Asheville. The main library in the Buncombe County system, the Pack Memorial Library renovation was completed at the end of 2010. According to the Buncombe County Public Libraries press release, the NCPLDA recognized the renovation as “an outstanding remodeled facility.”
