The 2012 School of Information and Library Science (SILS) Staff Excellence awards were presented to Kaitlyn Murphy, student services manager and Mark Snyder, desktop support and help desk manager during the School Retreat on December 6, 2012.
The award is presented to SILS staff members who have demonstrated excellence, commitment, teamwork and outstanding service to the School.
Murphy manages the student services activities of the SILS undergraduate program. She consistently provides support for prospective and current students regarding registration, program requirements and University deadlines as well as student advising and student admissions. Murphy promotes the program to those who have not declared a major and to others who may be unfamiliar with it. She also compiles statistics and other information related to the School's financial aid awards and has been responsible for the field experience program. Additionally, she coordinates the international summer seminars program for SILS.
“Every week during the summer months, Kaitlyn has promoted the undergraduate program by not only setting up the booth and designing materials that represents SILS at the CTOPS program that welcomes new students and many times their parents to campus, she has been there to make sure parents and students are greeted and have good information about the program. She is polite and has a winning smile - her honesty and concern always shines through. She is someone you want to have representing your school.” Another nominator added, “In addition to her stellar efforts on the recruitment front, she also takes excellent care of our BSIS students. She is available to answer any questions they might have along with making sure they have met all of their graduation requirements along the way. Kaitlyn truly cares about the success of our undergraduate students.”
Mark Snyder is the School’s desktop support and Help Desk manager who provides personal computing support for the faculty, staff and students within the School; and working at the Help Desk in the Information Technology Resource Center Computer Lab. Snyder is responsible for all desktop and mobile computing devices and serves as the first point of contact for IT Help Desk questions.
“He is quick to respond in every situation, always in a pleasant and helpful manner,” said one of his nominators. “Mark is unfailingly helpful and also deeply knowledgeable. He is responsive, courteous and never judgmental.” Another nominator says, “Mark has been indispensable to me in keeping my technological needs met promptly (from camera equipment to advice on Web page design to getting one of his student lab assistants to discuss options for video editing software to replacing a worn printer in my office, almost before I got back to my office from meeting with him). Mark always strives for excellence in his service to SILS, and he will always go the ‘extra mile’ to ensure that our needs are met quickly and completely…and he does it all with a smile on his face and a gentle and helpful attitude.” Other nominators reflected the same emphasis on customer service. “Mark is quick to respond in any situation and participates as a team player in all instances. It’s obvious that he takes pride in his work because everything I’ve seen from him has excellence written all over it. He is a true asset to SILS – always providing excellent and outstanding service in a team environment.”
Murphy and Snyder received framed certificates and $500 and three additional paid days of leave. Their names will also be submitted for the Chancellor’s Award in spring 2013.
