On Sunday, Dec. 15th, the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) will conduct its Fall commencement ceremony and celebration for students who have completed their degree requirements.

The SILS ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. in the Pleasants Family Assembly Room of the Louis Round Wilson Library. All members of the SILS community, and especially all graduating students and any friends and family they'd like to have join them, are invited to attend.

The commencement speaker for the ceremony is Joyce L. Ogburn (MSLS ‘82), dean of Libraries and Carol Grotnes Belk Distinguished Professor at Appalachian State University. Ogburn served as president of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) from 2011-2012, a 12,000 member professional organization that “works on behalf of 2,500 academic libraries across the country.” She was recently selected as one of 30 women to watch by Utah Business Magazine. “The annual 30 Women to Watch program shines the spotlight on women who are exceptional leaders, entrepreneurs, change-makers, mentors—and shining examples to the men and women who work in their industries.” The SILS Alumni Association has selected Ogburn as the next SILS Distinguished Alumna. She will receive the award during the commencement ceremony.

Arrive in the lobby of Wilson Library no later than 9:15 a.m.

Faculty: Assemble in the lobby of the Wilson Library at 9:30 a.m.

Guests: Proceed directly to the Wilson Library and be seated prior to the beginning of the ceremony.

Students and Faculty: A group photo will be taken on the steps of the Wilson Library immediately following the ceremony.

A reception will follow the ceremony in the lobby of the Wilson Library.

The school has a small number of caps, gowns and hoods available from previous commencement ceremonies that may be borrowed. Contact Tiffany Harris in the SILS Dean's Office at 919-962-8366 beginning Monday, Dec. 2nd if you would like to borrow any of these items.

Caps and gowns will be available in Student Stores of the Daniels Building in early December  through December 15th.* For more information, including dates when regalia will be available, please go to the Student Stores Web site.

You may wish to consider donating your regalia to SILS after the reception for future ceremonies.

There is parking at the Morehead Planetarium lot on Franklin St. as well as various locations on the UNC campus not marked as 24 hour reserved spaces.

University Commencement Activities 
SILS students are encouraged to participate in the University ceremony, which will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15th, in the Dean E. Smith Center. Graduates should arrive at 1:00 p.m. and enter the arena through Entry D. Parents and families should use Entry A.

Kevin Guskiewicz, a world renowned concussion expert and MacArthur “genius” grant winner, will speak at the University's December Commencement ceremony. Chancellor Carol Folt will preside at the ceremony.
