Marjorie M. K. Hlava, Board of Visitors member of the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and founder and chair of Access Innovations, Inc. of Albuquerque, is among 32 New Mexicans honored as 2013 “Women of Influence” by Albuquerque Business First.
Hlava, a pioneer in the information management industry, founded Access Innovations in 1978. She holds 21 patent claims in two patents for a number of technological processes including automatic text processing and management and software-based methods for searching chemical names in text-containing documents.
She was chosen from more than 400 nominees by a panel of judges based on her leadership, community service and support of other women in the professional world.
“One of the things [our winners] emphasized most was the need for mentoring among professional women," explained Rachel Sams, managing editor of Albuquerque Business First, in writing about the 2013 Women of Influence awards. "They know how important that is because they’re doing it. They are teaching and learning from other women, formally and informally, juggling the roles of mentor and mentee simultaneously. They are shaping their own paths and sharing the knowledge they gain along the way so that the women who follow them have even more opportunities to succeed.”
Hlava, one of three award winners selected in the technology category, said, “Throughout my over three decades in the information industry I have worked to encourage other women to go into technical fields and into business for themselves, to help forge new paths in the digital age of knowledge management, and to share what I have learned along the way. I am honored to be acknowledged among a group of outstanding women throughout our community who are truly moving New Mexico ahead.”
The 2013 Women of Influence will be honored at an awards dinner on February 22, 2013. At that time, rankings will be announced and category winners will be revealed. Profiles of honorees will be published in a special report in Albuquerque Business First in February 2013.
