August 19, 2013

The new documentary Terms & Conditions May Apply,  is coming to the AMC Southpoint 17 Theater, in Durham, North Carolina on September 4th at 7:00 p.m.

The movie discusses what may be included in the terms and conditions users agree to when signing in to social media sites. Dr. Zeynep Tufekci, assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Information and Library Science, and a fellow at both the Center for Information Technology at Princeton University and at Harvard University’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society, is one of several, including Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook fame; Eric Schmidt of Google; Ray Kurzweil, futurist and inventor; John Palfrey, head of the Phillips Academy and former Henry n. Ess III professor of Law and vice dean for Library and Information Resources at Harvard Law School; and many others who are featured in the film.

Numerous Web-based corporations have failed to share with the public the harvesting of our personal information and how it is managed across multiple levels of exchange. The film reveals what is done with all the data collected about us that we unwitting consent to whenever we register on a Web site, or even when just visiting a site. Users are unaware of the huge volume of information collected about each of them every year, and how widely it is sold or shared. The film discusses how the public should learn how this is happening, and how it affects employer job screenings, our health care systems, business ethics and the legal challenges at every level. Our personal, psychological, social and religious profiles are being distributed on a large scale, and few are aware. To see the trailer, please go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4taIHAaLdKE
