Drs. Gary Marchionini and Ron Homecoming marked the date of the launch of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Information and Library Science (SILS) Alumni Inclusion and Diversity Committee (SAID). Alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends celebrated homecoming and the formation of the group during a reception in the SILS Library in Manning Hall on Saturday, November 9th.

“We are pleased to acknowledge the members of the SAID committee, a dynamic and visionary alumni group, and officially begin this new and energizing diversity initiative,” said Dr. Gary Marchionini, SILS dean and Cary C. Boshamer Distinguished Professor. “The formation of the SAID Committee is just the beginning of a broad and concerted effort to deepen minority-alumni engagement with UNC and enhance the information professions.”

“The charge from Dean Marchionini is to increase and improve diversity and inclusion within the School," said Samira Fazel Creel (MSIS '04), co-chair of SAID and IT manager at Capital One. "We know that SILS is an innovator in its work, and the goal is to be an innovator in bringing together people with different backgrounds, skills, interests and ideas.  The SAID committee hopes to increase the engagement and involvement of minority students by working with the dean and School to develop and implement a smart, sustainable and scalable plan to accomplish this goal. We’ll be looking at opportunities to create deeper partnerships between SILS and other programs at Carolina, current SILS students and alumni.”

Creel asked her fellow alumni to complete a short survey that she will take back to the SAID Committee. She also requested feedback and suggestions from the group before inviting them to a reception. SILS students were on hand to take alumni on tours of Manning Hall to introduce them to the recently acquired space on the first and ground floors of the building.

Those in attendance posed for a group photo to mark this significant event. To view photos taken during the ceremony and reception, go to the SILS Flickr site at:
