Dr. Sandra Hughes-Hassell, professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Information and Library Science (SILS) has been honored with the opportunity to be the "Call-to-Action" speaker at this year’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Sunrise Celebration during the American Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Meeting in Seattle, WA. Hughes-Hassell will speak alongside Jeanne Theoharis, professor of political science at the Brooklyn College of the City University of New York.
The theme of this year’s celebration is “Stride Toward Freedom” and will feature many ALA leaders. Hughes-Hassell’s current area of research is in social justice issues in youth library services, and the role of school libraries. Her work has recently been published in Library Quarterly, Library and Information Science Research and School Library Research Teacher Librarian.
