"U.S. News and World Report" releases best graduate school rankings

The School of Information and Library Science (SILS) of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has received the nation's number two ranking of best "Library and Information Studies" graduate schools by U.S. News and World Report in the magazine's 2014 edition of “America's Best Graduate Schools.” SILS was also highly ranked in seven out of seven specialty areas of the magazine's top list, including:

  • Archives and Preservation 1st (tied with Simmons and University of Michigan)
  • Digital librarianship 1st
  • Health librarianship 2nd
  • Law Librarianship 4th
  • Information Systems 6th
  • Services for children and youth 8th
  • School Library Media 10 (tied with Simmons)

The top ranked library and information studies programs in the magazine's report include:

1. University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign  - 4.6

2. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill - 4.5

3. University of Washington - 4.4

4. Syracuse University - 4.3

4. University of Michigan-Ann Arbor - 4.3

6. Rutgers, the State U of New Jersey-New Brunswick - 4.0

6. University of Texas-Austin - 4.0

8. Indiana University-Bloomington - 3.9

9. Simmons College - 3.8

10. Drexel University - 3.7

10. University of Maryland-College Park - 3.7

10. University of Pittsburgh - 3.7

The rankings for the 51 accredited information and library science schools are based on a 2012 survey of deans, program directors and senior faculty of the schools. According to information released by U.S. News and World Report, those responding to the surveys rated programs on their academic quality using a scale of one to five with five as outstanding. SILS received a 4.5 overall ranking for its accredited Master's programs. The specialty areas are ranked based on nominations from respondents from peer institutions. They rated each school for excellence in each given specialty area.

Rankings highlights will be published in the 2014 edition of “America’s Best Graduate Schools” by U.S. News Media Group available on newsstands starting April 9.
