It was a perfect day for a marathon. The sky was Carolina blue, temperatures were cool and more than 12,500 people were in Raleigh to join in on the first ever Raleigh Rock ‘n’ Roll half marathon and marathon race. At each mile marker, musicians with rock and other type of bands performed along the way.
Dr. Cal Lee, Frances Carroll McColl Term Professor at the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, finished the 26.2 mile full marathon on Sunday, April 13, 2014. It was Lee’s second marathon, the first was completed November 3, 2013.
He finished the marathon in 3 hours 51 minutes and 01 second, about 13 minutes quicker than his November run.
Former SILSters, Kaitlyn Murphy and Stephanie Peterson completed the half marathon.
Runners of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Raleigh races benefitted The V Foundation for Cancer Research.
Lee's children cheered him on with "Go Dad" signs.
