Dr. Fred StutzmanDr. Fred Stutzman (Ph.D. '11) and Oakkar Oakkar (MSIS '13), entrepreneurs and alumni of the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, participated in the annual Emerging Company Showcase 2014 on April 28, 2014 at the William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education. Their companies, along with others representing promising companies started by students, faculty or staff at UNC at Chapel Hill, were highlighted during the event.

Oakkar presented an overview of Keona Health to a private group prior to the event.

In addition, according to the news release, "ten companies presented eight-minute formal pitches before being joined by early-stage student and alumni startups for a demo and networking session. The chance to meet potential investors and service providers, or fill in a missing piece of their team, are reasons the young companies look forward to the event."

“This annual event is a celebration of exciting research and innovation undertaken at UNC, and highlights our efforts to translate discoveries outside of the University,” said Don Rose, director of Carolina KickStart. “It also gives the companies an opportunity to connect with important people in area, whether it is an investor, a service provider or someone interested in their company’s product.”

Some of the start-up companies have found their beginnings in campus incubators such as Launch Chapel Hill. The incubators and accelerators help by providing office space and access to legal and accounting services as well as to mentors and other entrepreneurs.

Stutzman, who is also an adjunct professor at SILS, is CEO of 80 Percent Solutions a company that "offers software productivity tools for a device-saturated workforce. His products have been featured in national media outlets such as The New York Times, The Economist and Wired Magazine and boast more than a million downloads to date. He is using the accelerator to help launch into the global market.

Oakkar is the CEO and founding member of KeonaHealth, a company that produces software to streamline telephone calls to your healthcare provider's office.
