“Libraries Reach Out to Young Black Men,” an article in the November issue of School Library Journal, features the research and leadership of SILS Professor Sandra Hughes-Hassell, as well as library programs organized by SILS graduates Demetria Tucker (MSLS '78) and Faith Burns (MSLS ’15).
The story quotes Hughes-Hassell on a variety of topics related to improving library services for African-American youth, and discusses the “Building a Bridge to Literacy for African-American Male Youth” summit hosted by SILS and North Carolina Central University in 2012.
The article also highlights Tucker’s efforts to make the Pearl Bailey Library in Newport News, Va., a more positive and empowering space for local teens, and how Burns is working to let teens visiting the Durham County Public Library in Durham, N.C., know their voices matter.
