SILS partnering with Heels for Homes

September 30, 2016

On September 29, as part of a celebration for the Northside Neighborhood in Chapel Hill, Habitat for Humanity of Orange County and the UNC-CH Habitat for Humanity student group launched a yearlong event to build ten new homes and complete repairs on 25 homes in the Northside Neighborhood. As a partner in the Heels for Homes project, the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends are invited to help raise money ($25,000) and roofs over the coming year.

As part of the effort, the UNC Habitat for Humanity student group has set up a virtual race at Racery Through this site, teams can compete in fundraising, volunteering, and running. There is currently a UNC SILS team. Once that one fills up, the next person can create a “UNC SILS 2” team and so on. If you don’t feel like being part of a team, you can back a SILS team with donations through the site. The race on Racery will continue through November 10, but even when the virtual race is over, you can still donate both time and money.

If you would prefer not to donate through the Racery website, you can donate directly through the Habitat for Humanity of Orange County website, or mail a check to their office and put “SILS” on the memo line (88 Vilcom Center Drive, Suite L110, Chapel Hill, NC).

Building days are four hour blocks on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. UNC employees who sign-up for weekday building may use their “Community Leave” time offered by the University (for the TIM system). Habitat for Humanity is currently working on creating some group build time for SILS folks. Until that happens please feel free to volunteer through the community volunteer page  When the SILS group builds are available, Susan Sylvester will be sure send out notification through the SILS' listservs.

Please feel free to contact Susan at if you have any questions or would like any additional information.
