2016 Steinfirst lecturer wins Newbery Medal

Author Matt de la Peña, who will present the Susan Steinfirst Memorial Lecture in Children's Literature in March, was awarded the 2016 John Newbery Medal on January 11 for his most recent picture book, Last Stop on Market Street. De la Peña is the first Latino author to win the award, which is presented annually by the American Library Association for the most outstanding contribution to children's literature.

Illustrated by Christian Robinson, Last Stop on Market Street was also named a Randolph Caldecott Medal and Coretta Scott King Book Award honoree.

De la Peña is the author of six critically-acclaimed young adult novels and two picture books. He will deliver the Steinfirst Lecture on Sunday, March 13, 2016, at 3 p.m. at the main branch of the Durham County Public Library, (300 N. Roxboro Street, Durham, 27701). Hosted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Information and Library Science (SILS), the event is free and open to the public
