Maggie Hite (MSLS ’06), Front Desk Coordinator for the UNC School of Information and Library Science (SILS), was presented the SILS Staff Excellence Award at the holiday party on Dec. 9. The annual award recognizes SILS staff members who have demonstrated commitment, teamwork, and outstanding service to the School. Nominations are solicited from faculty, staff and students at SILS. Winners receive a framed certificate, $500, and three additional paid days of leave. Their names are also submitted for the campus-wide Chancellor’s Award.
Nominators repeatedly cited Hite’s sunny disposition, her genuine care for the welfare of the School and its students, and her willingness to go above and beyond her job requirements “for the good of the order” as reasons she should receive the honor.
“Maggie is consistently offering her full toolkit of expertise and personality in any SILS situation that comes up,” wrote one nominator. “She cares about SILS and it shows. I’ve seen her tear up over an alum who was at a low point in their life, and go out of her way to help a current student. This level of commitment is apparent in how she has made her mark on both her personal space and her current role at SILS.”
Hite joined SILS front office in April of 2016. She had previously worked for the SILS Library and Davis Library, as well as for the Chapel Hill Public Library. From 1999-2005, she was Assistant Director of the World Library Partnership in Zimbabwe and South Africa. SILS awarded her the Outstanding Service to the School Award at graduation in 2006.
