Elizabeth Bueche and Lydia Heater, sophomores and newly-admitted Bachelor of Science in Information Science (BSIS) students at the UNC School of Information and Library Science (SILS), have been selected to receive $1,000 merit-based scholarships for the spring semester. The scholarships are given to two students each fall and spring who have shown high scholastic achievement and written excellent essays.
Bueche, a native of Waxhaw, NC, who is double majoring in information science and economics with a minor in entrepreneurship, says she came to SILS because of her interest in how people interact with information.
“The information science major combines the best of both worlds for me: people and technology,” Bueche said. “I have loved my experience in the school so far and am excited for my classes to come.” Bueche plans to pursue a career in cybersecurity, most likely in the corporate sector.
Heater, from High Point, NC, is pairing her information science major with a major in computer science and a minor in Spanish to pursue a career as a software developer.
“I hope to combine these two majors to graduate as a well-rounded software developer,” Heater said. “Through computer science, I want to learn the technical skills necessary to program. Through information science, I want to learn how to use organization and communication skills to help non-programmers interact with the software that I contribute to.”
Bueche and Heater both said the scholarship from SILS reassured them that they had made the right decision in choosing information science.
“Receiving this scholarship indicates to me that I have chosen the correct major and that the school believes I have the potential for a successful career in the coming years,” Bueche said.
Heater, who said that after two semesters of classes, she “really found a community environment within the school,” said the scholarship further increased her already high regard for SILS.
“This scholarship reinforces my feeling of acceptance in the community that is SILS,” Heater said. “Receiving this scholarship makes me feel supported and motivated in pursuing my future goals.”
