The 2018 calendar year brought lots of “new” for the UNC School of Information and Library Science (SILS). We launched new outreach programs, like the Health Informatics Data Analytics and Visualization (HiDAV) boot camp, which introduced students from Historical Black Colleges and Universities to career opportunities in health informatics. We went live with a new design and architecture for our website. We welcomed five new faculty members, who bring expertise in engaging children with data science, creating inclusive makerspaces, mining insights from health data, increasing equity and inclusion in youth library services, and preserving new media artifacts. And when we welcomed new students this fall, they became part of the largest student body in SILS’ history.
In the midst of all these introductions and changes, we knew we could rely on our faculty, staff, and students to continue our tradition of excellence. As in years past, 2018 saw multiple awards and honors for research, community engagement, and professional contributions.
