Zeynep Tufekci: “Russian Meddling Is a Symptom, Not the Disease”

UNC School of Information and Library Science (SILS) Associate Professor Zeynep Tufekci discussed how domestic political polarization, feeding into the basic business model of companies like Facebook and Youtube, foster the dissemination of false and divisive materials in an op-ed published by The New York Times.

“It is understandable that legislators and the public are concerned about other countries meddling in our elections. But foreign meddling is to our politics what a fever is to tuberculosis: a mere symptom of a deeper problem,” Tufekci writes.
