SILS statement on coronavirus COVID-19 developments

Faculty, staff, and administrators at the UNC School of Information and Library Science (SILS) are staying in close contact with University officials and leaders in other schools and departments around campus. We will share updates on our website and email listservs as soon as they become available.

  • The University has created the Carolina Together website, where you can find information about the Roadmap for Fall of 2020, including the adjusted academic calendar. Classes are now scheduled to begin on Aug. 10 and final exams will be completed by Nov. 24.

  • We also encourage you to monitor updates from the University at

  • Carolina began phasing in the return of its workforce on June 1. Some units and employees (including the majority of SILS staff members) will continue to work remotely if they are able to do so effectively.

  • The Office of the University Registrar under the authority of the Provost has approved emergency grading accommodations. Find links to the policies for spring and summer on the Registrar's website.

  • Grading policies and plans for the fall are among the topics regularly discussed at SILS All-School Meetings. You can download the minutes from the meetings held on March 25, April 1, April 8, April 15 , and April 22, and May 13.

  • Carolina postponed all spring commencement events, including the doctoral hooding ceremony on May 9 and the ceremony in Kenan Stadium on May 10. School and unit ceremonies, including the SILS ceremony on May 7, have also been postponed.

  • All Carolina summer 2020 courses - Maymester, Summer I, and Summer II - will be delivered through online instruction.

  • The University has introduced a student care hub at to help students navigate their new learning and living situations. Faculty can find resources to help with online instruction at

  • UNC students facing financial hardships because of COVID-19 can apply for assistance with various expenses from housing and food to travel, technology, and more. Find more information and apply on the Financial Resources page of

  • SILS has postponed the 2020 Kilgour Lecture with Arvind Narayanan and the CITAP panel "Free Speech, Paid Speech, and Fake Speech," originally set for April 3. Both events are tentatively rescheduled for Sept. 10. SILS is also postponing the 2020 Steinfirst Lecture with MK England until the spring of 2021. Additional details will be shared closer to the new dates. The 2020 Symposium of Information for Social Good and the SILS Project Fair have also been cancelled.
