Jennie Minor started her professional library career at NoveList a month after graduating from SILS in May of 2014. She currently works as a Metadata Librarian in the Book Discovery department. As a metadata librarian, Minor spends the majority of her time cataloging children’s and young adult fiction and nonfiction for the NoveList databases. She also catalogs children’s, young adult, and adult audiobooks, assists with collection development of titles from Canada, adds author's websites and book awards to the NoveList databases, updates the audiobook landing page on a monthly basis to highlight forthcoming and award-winning audiobooks, and writes title-to-title book recommendations.
Prior to her career at NoveList, Minor had worked at a variety of academic, public, and special libraries throughout undergraduate and graduate school, including Davis Library, UNC (Reference); Ullman Classics Library, UNC (Head Librarian); DH Hill Library, NCSU (Reference); Hiram College Library (Circulation); Wake County Public Libraries (Readers’ Advisory and Reference); and the Gelbke Fine Arts Center at Hiram College (Collection Management & Cataloging). Throughout all these positions, Minor gained experience in many different aspects of librarianship, invlufinh circulation, reference, readers’ advisory, cataloging, shelving, collection development, and management.
On top of all the library experience she was able to gain while in school, receiving her MSLS from UNC SILS also played a very important role in helping Minor achieve her goals. She found her courses in Readers’ Advisory and Popular Materials, Children’s Literature, Young Adult Literature, Storytelling, and her master’s thesis, to be especially valuable. Her professors and the librarians on UNC’s campus were incredibly supportive and always willing to talk with her about libraries, librarianship, applying for jobs, etc. She would especially like to thank her advisor, Barbara Moran (the first person to actually introduce her to NoveList), Brian Sturm, Mary-Grace Flaherty, and Sandra Hughes-Hassell for being outstanding professors, as well as UNC librarians, Jacqueline Solis, Tommy Nixon, and Nathaniel King for being wonderful mentors and references.
