Connecting to SILS printers

Printing from a SILS Windows computer

  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Type \\sils-pelican and press enter
  3. Double-click on the printer you want to add
    • For black and white printing, double-click SILS-BWCOPY
    • For color printing, double-click SILS-COLORCOPY
  4. Once the driver installs, the printer should be available to select from any application's print menu

Printing from a personal Windows computer

  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Type \\sils-pelican.ad.unc.edu and press enter
  3. When prompted for credentials, enter:
        username: ad\your-onyen
        password: your onyen password
    Do not have Windows remember your onyen password; otherwise, it may lock you out the next time you change it.
  4. Double-click on the printer you want to add
  5. Once the driver installs, the printer should be available to select from any application's print menu

Printing from OSX with JAMF

  1. Open the JAMF Self Service application
  2. Install the SILS Copier
  3.  
  4. Once the banner appears notifying you that the installation has completed, the printer should be available to select from any application's print menu.
  • With the JAMF installer, Accounting is already turned on and the printer is set to black and white by default. 
  • This method does not require printing presets in order to use accounting or black and white printing.

Printing from macOS Video Instructions.

Printing from a personal or non-JAMF OSX/macOS computer

  1. Install the printer driver from the SILS Apps folder
    1. Open Finder and select Go > Connect to Server
    2. Enter smb://storage.unc.edu/SILS/apps as the server address
    3. Enter your onyen and onyen password when prompted for credentials
    4. Open the Printer Drivers and OSX sub-folder and to find the driver
  2. From the System Preferences menu, select Printer & Scanners
  3. Click the plus sign to begin adding the new printer
  4. Click the gear-shaped Advanced icon in the toolbar. If you don't see an Advanced icon:
    1. Hold down the control key and click the grey area around the icons and search bar
    2. Click Customize...
    3. Drag the Advanced icon onto the toolbar
    4. Click Done to return to the Add menu
  5. Click the Advanced icon.
  6. From the Type drop-down, select Windows printer via spoolss.
  7. In the URL box, enter smb://SILS-Pelican.ad.unc.edu/PrinterName (replace PrinterName with actual printer name)
  8. In the Name box, enter the name you'd like displayed in your computer's printer list.
  9. From the Use dropdown, select Select Software... and scroll to the correct driver.
  10. Click OK, and the printer should be listed in any application's print menu.
  11. You may be prompted for a password when you print. If so, use your onyen login.

Printing presets on macOS

  • Required to use Xerox accounting and black and white printing in many applications on macOS

How to setup preset on macOS

1. Open a Microsoft Word document and open Print dialogue.

2. Select Printer from the printer dropdown.

3. Select Xerox Features from the options dropdown

4. Select Advanced from the dropdown that appears.

5. Click the Accounting… button next to Configuration

6. Set Accounting System to Xerox Standard Accounting, enter your 4-digit PIN as the Default User ID, and set the Default Account Type to Default Group Account

7. Click OK to return to the Advanced menu, then change the Advanced dropdown to Color Options. 

8. Select Black and White. 

9. From the Presets dropdown, select Save Current Settings as Preset… 

10. Name your preset SILS-BWCOPY

11. On the Color Options menu, select Vivid Color; repeat step 9 to save a SILS-COLORCOPY preset.

12. To print to the copier, select your preset from the print menu in any application
