SILS 2016 Spring Commencement
SILS hosted its spring commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 8. In addition to celebrating the 2016 BSIS, MSIS, MSLS, and Ph.D., graduates, the event included recognition for exceptional student research, excellence in teaching, and outstanding service to the school, as well as the presentation of the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award to Tim Shearer (MSLS ’97). Author Matt de La Peña photo Professor Sandra Hughes-Hassell elected to lead YALSA
SILS Professor Sandra Hughes-Hassell has been elected to the 2016-19 Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) Board of Directors as President-Elect. Hughes-Hassell has been active with the organization for many years, previously serving on the board from 2011-2014 and as editor of YALSA’s Journal of Research on Libraries and Young Adults. Holly Croft and Amelia Holmes awarded MER Conference scholarships
Nahali (Holly) Croft, a recent SILS MSLS graduate, and Amelia Holmes, who will complete her MSLS in August, have received scholarships to attend the Managing Electronic Records (MER) Conference in Chicago, May 23-25. SILS Associate Professor Cal Lee introduced the program at SILS in 2006, and two students have benefitted from the scholarships funded by MER sponsor Cohasset Associates each year since. William Kamkwamba working with WiderNet to bridge the know-do gap
Malawian innovator and author William Kamkwamba is working with the WiderNet Project and WiderNet@UNC to create learning modules that will encourage people to seek out new knowledge and apply it through meaningful projects. During the spring semester, Kamkwamba visited Associate Professor Cliff Missen's Database Systems class to share his experiences and provide input on a class project. In Deepest Sympathy

William H. “Bill” Graves, Ph.D., a SILS Board of Visitors member, died on April 9, 2016, after a protracted and valiant struggle with brain cancer. A celebration of Dr. Graves’ life will be held Monday, June 6, at 2 p.m. at the Carolina Club in the George Watts Hill Alumni Center. Raymond Leonard Carpenter, Jr., an alumnus, former dean, and professor emeritus of SILS, died peacefully on April 25, 2016, while in hospice care. SILS welcomes your thoughts, memories, and condolences. Please visit our remembrance page to leave your message.
