Fall 2020 Registrar's Calendar

Instruction mode key:
Instruction modes for each class are listed next to the course. All of the asynchronous courses are with the online courses at the bottom of this page.

  • Hyflex: option of attending class sessions in the classroom, online or a combination of both
  • Remote, synchronous: class has set day and time for meeting
  • Remote, asynchronous: class does not have a set day or time meeting, refer to syllabus for course for schedule of assignments.

Fall 2020 Grading Policy:

At SILS, we have had extensive discussions between and across different groups (students, faculty, staff, adjuncts, etc.), and the consensus is that we feel graduate students have enough stressors in their lives at the moment, that adding detailed grades to that makes little sense.  A poll of the graduate students and a separate poll of the faculty revealed similar views.  We want to keep the educational excellence to which we are all accustomed, but reduce the stress during these wild times.

To that end, here is the plan for grading this semester:

  • For undergraduate students, SILS will follow the UNC plan: instructors will give normal grades (A,B,C with + and -, etc.), and undergraduates will be able to select whether to make a particular course Pass/Fail.  They must choose by November 17th, the last day of classes.
  • For graduate students, SILS will assign ONLY Pass/Fall final grades this semester.  We are working with the university registrar to try to ensure that the ConnectCarolina system will only allow those final grades on the grade roster.  So, while faculty may give you a different grade on particular assignments to show true excellence or the need to improve, the final grades will all be just P/F.

WISE COURSES:

Web-based Information Science Education (WISE) is a unique and groundbreaking opportunity for students to take online elective Information and Library Science accredited courses from other universities. Students have the opportunity to access distance education courses through WISE member schools who have met the quality bar in online education. As such, students may access courses from a wider base of faculty and research than may be normally available within their home school. WISE students have the ability to select from a wide array of online courses, regardless of their location, and take courses with faculty who are highly regarded in their area of expertise. WISE students pay tuition at their home school at their regular credit hour rate.
