Giving to SILS

A Message from the Former Dean

Few things have the power to shape our world as dramatically as information. Providing reliable access to valid information can mean the difference between health and illness, progress and stagnation, democracy and tyranny.

The UNC School of Information and Library Science is determined to continue and expand its role as a leader in shaping the future of information. We will develop new theories, practices, and systems to meet the world’s ever-expanding information needs based on our core strengths in digital curation, information interaction, health informatics, and librarianship. We are motivated by the impact we know our research and advocacy make – higher levels of prosperity, greater social justice and equity, and increased understanding among all peoples.

Our endeavors keep growing as our faculty make discoveries and devise innovative projects to improve how information is shared, stored, and organized. We are constantly seeking new collaborations with on-campus partners, business and industry leaders, and researchers at other institutions across the globe. Each semester, we welcome new students with fresh ideas, and each year, we graduate new information professionals who make an immeasurable impact on their chosen professions.

Our vision will drive our success. So will philanthropic investment – specifically, the gifts and pledges of our leadership alumni and other key SILS stakeholders. Crucial financial support will nourish big ideas and bold ambitions so they become real advancements. If our vision resonates with your passion, I invite you to join us in creating a brighter future for information and the world.

Sincerely,

Gary Marchionini
Former Dean and Cary C. Boshamer Distinguished Professor
