Illustrated by Luisa Uribe, The Vast Wonder of the World tells the story of African-American scientist Ernest Everett Just, who overcame hardships and discrimination to become a successful professor, embryologist, and cytologist in the early 20th century.

Since its publication in the fall of 2018, the book has received favorable reviews from School Library JournalPublisher’s Weekly, and Kirkus Reviews, which describes it as “More than a story of triumph against the odds, this book shows the necessity of opportunity for brilliant minds to reach their potential.”

A Minneapolis Public Schools librarian, Mangal and her book were featured on KARE11, the NBC affiliate in Minneapolis, shortly before the book’s publication. Learn more about the author at www.melinamangal.com.
