Endeavors looks at the history and future of search research at SILS
Endeavors, the online research magazine of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, recently published a series of retrospective features to show the advancement of projects that the publication highlighted years or even decades earlier.
In 2000, Endeavors talked with researchers with the Interaction Design Lab (IDL) at the UNC School of Information and Library Science (SILS).
In “Searching for Better Ways to Search,” published May 19, Endeavors catches up with SILS Dean Gary Marchionini to highlight some of the IDL’s most important findings, including the use of keyframes to categorize videos.
The article also looks at current research being conducted in the Interactive Information Systems Lab, led by SILS Associate Professors Rob Capra and Jaime Arguello.
“What we’ve been focusing on is how search engines and users can work together in an interface where users can provide more information about the context of their task and the search system can provide more help toward getting people to their learning or broader objectives,” Capra says.
