‘Searching for Information in the Digital Era’ panel with Francesca Tripodi on April 22
Francesca Tripodi, Assistant Professor at the UNC School of Information and Library Science (SILS), will serve as a panelist for “Truth & Denial: Searching for Information in the Digital Era,” Thursday, April 22, 12:00-1:30pm PST (3:00pm-4:30pm EST). Register now.
This online event is part of UC Berkeley’s Matrix on Point discussion series, which promotes focused, cross-disciplinary conversations on today’s most pressing contemporary issues.
Other panelists for April 22 include Sun-ha Hong, Assistant Professor of Communication at Simon Fraser University, and Kevin Roose, author and tech columnist for the New York Times. David Barstow, Reva and David Logan Distinguished Chair in Investigative Journalism at Berkeley Journalism, will serve as moderator.
Panelists will approach questions of objectivity, disinformation, and the construction of truth from a media-consumption (rather than media-production) perspective, focusing on how internet users find information, how algorithms play a deterministic role in search results, and how lies propagate and solidify.
In addition to her appointment with SILS, Tripodi is a senior faculty researcher with the Center for Information, Technology, and Public Life (CITAP) and an affiliate at the Data & Society Research Institute. In 2019, she testified before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee on her research, explaining how search processes are gamed to maximize exposure and drive ideologically based queries. This research is the basis of her book, which is under contract with Yale University Press.
