The UNC School of Information and Library Science (SILS) is hosting the 2022 Symposium on Information for Social Good on Friday, April 22, 2022 from 8:30am-3pm.

The SILS Symposium on Information for Social Good is a mini-conference that offers an opportunity for SILS undergraduate and master’s students to engage the wider fields of information, data, and library science through in-person and online discussion. Conference posters and panels will focus on the intersection of ethics, equity, justice and information, knowledge, and technology.

During the Symposium, students and faculty will present research on special topics within information and library science. Additionally, Anna Lauren Hoffmann will present the Symposium’s keynote address, titled “‘Ethical Tech’ and the Politics of Potential, or: Algorithms Are Kid Stuff.” Hoffmann is an assistant professor with The Information School at the University of Washington. She is a senior fellow with the Center for Applied Transgender Studies and a founding member of the UW iSchool’s AfterLab, a research center dedicated to critical information, data, and archival studies. Her work has appeared in New Media & Society, Review of Communication, and Information, Communication, & Society.

The Symposium is free to attend and open to the UNC at Chapel Hill community and public and will be held at the Carolina Union. The Symposium will be livestreamed for those who wish to attend virtually. Lunch will be provided to in-person attendees who register by April 13.
