Careers and Professional Development

The career opportunities that exist for graduates with degrees in information science are growing at a rapid pace. The information industry is one of the fastest growing sectors of the economy and, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, three of the top 10 fastest-growing occupations are in the information industry.  As more information is produced it becomes imperative that information be collected, organized, and managed properly so that it will be accessible to those who need it. Information professionals play an increasingly important role in all types of information age organizations, enabling users to access the information they need.

The School of Information and Library Science works closely with University Career Services to assist its graduates in securing professional employment. Students desiring placement services consult with a Career Services counselor and establish a credentials file when they begin seeking a job.  The school assists in placement by providing information concerning the various areas of opportunity and their relation to the SILS program. SILS solicits information on employment opportunities for its students and graduates, and announces job opportunities through the sils-jobs listserv (each student must subscribe to this listserv, if interested).
