Information and Library Science Student Association (ILSSA)
ILSSA officers are liaisons between SILS students and faculty, alumni, and the Graduate & Professional Student Federation.

The organization provides a forum for discussion and action regarding school policies and issues, plans social events, and coordinates professional development opportunities.

Any SILS student of any level, part-time or full-time, from any background or area of interest is welcome! By being a student, you’re already a member of ILSSA.

Doctoral Students Association (DSA)
The DSA is the official organization for SILS PhD students. All doctoral students are automatically members of the DSA. The organization works towards improving communication among doctoral students, masters’ students, and faculty by participating in SILS governance and sending representatives to most SILS committees. They elect officers annually in November and hold monthly meetings. Learn more about the DSA at tarheels.live/silsdsa/.

Community Workshop Series (CWS)

This is a student-led volunteer initiative between UNC’s School of Library & Information Science (SILS) and local libraries. The organization’s mission, “Digital Literacy for All”, is accomplished by teaching free computer and technology classes to library patrons. Topics span from smartphone basics, computer basics, search engine basics, drop-in tech help, internet basics, Google apps, and more.

CWS currently partners with four local libraries: Chapel Hill Public Library, Carrboro Cybrary, Durham County Southwest Branch, and Durham County Main Branch.

Queer Library & Information Collective (QLIC)
QLIC (Queer Library & Information Collective) is a queer student organization that strives to create an inclusive space for all students to excel academically and socially. Based at the UNC School of Information and Library Science, we host social events and contribute to student outreach and advocacy efforts. We value and support queer and intersectional feminist interests within our school, community, and the information and library science fields. We recognize the intersectionality of oppression and strive to create a welcoming and just environment. QLIC is open to everyone. Email: qlic@unc.edu

Flourish is a student group intended to enhance community, networking, and support for students of color and international students at SILS.

Art & Museum Library & Information Student Society (AMLISS)

AMLISS aims to provide students with the opportunity to explore art, museum and visual resources librarianship and records management. Through lectures, workshops, special events and visits to museum and art libraries, AMLISS will promote these areas of specialization within the field of library and information science and records management to any interested students.

Special Libraries Association (SLA)
A special library is an information agency sponsored by a private company, government agency, a not-for-profit organization, or a professional association. The student chapter of the SLA educates and involves students in special information and library center work environments and sponsors speakers from the professional community and frequent tours to area special libraries. Membership in a student chapter of the SLA helps to establish a close relationship between the individual and the state and national organization.

Student Association of Black Librarians (SABL)
The Student Association of Black Librarians (S.A.B.L) aims to create a space for community, professional development, and camaraderie between black Library and Information Science students. We strive to be a safe and welcoming place for all members to share experiences, ideas, and connections.

Student Chapter of the Society of American Archivists (SCOSAA)
SCOSAA is dedicated to the professional development of SILS students by broadening their understanding of issues related to the archival, museum, and cultural heritage professions. The student chapter organizes career development events and mixers, schedules speakers, and explores volunteer and field experience possibilities.
