Study Abroad

Advising 

Students should meet with an advisor in the Study Abroad Office to discuss program logistics like applications, housing, and student life. To find the appropriate advisor and to schedule a meeting, visit theStudy Abroad Office. 

Students are also encouraged to meet with their SILS advisor or student services manager to discuss course planning and degree timeline. 

Course Credit 

Abroad credit transfer is not guaranteed and should be confirmed with SILS one month before or during the exchange. The study abroad portal maintains a list ofpre-approved courses. To request degree credit approval for any courses not on the pre-approved list, students must use the portal to submit a request with the abroad syllabus.  

Funding Resources 

SILS and UNC-CH offer several competitive and noncompetitive funding options for undergraduate and graduate students. These can be used for field research, study abroad, international internships, conference participation, foreign language training and more. Students are encouraged to inquire about SILS options with their SILS advisor or student services manager.

Summer 2025 Faculty-Led Programs: 

UNC Weaponizing Knowledge in Germany

This is a four-week program in Tübingen, Germany co-taught by Dr. Francesca Tripodi of SILS and Dr. Priscilla Layne of German Slavic Language. Students will critically examine the intricate relationship between knowledge and power, particularly in the context of propaganda and disinformation. This contributes to SILS credit as an elective for the BSIS major and IS minor. The application is open from November 15, 2024 to January 31, 2025.

UNC SILS in Greece  

This is a three-week program in Athens and Thessaloniki, Greece taught by Rebecca Vargha. The program is targeted towards SILS graduate students but is open to undergraduate SILS majors and minors. This contributes to SILS credit as INLS 690. The application is open from November 15, 2024 to January 31, 2025.

Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) – Exchange in Seoul, South Korea  

Building at Sungkyunkwan UniversitySungkyunkwan University (SKKU) was founded over 600 years ago and is one of Asia’s oldest institutions of higher learning.Students attending this program will have access to one of the most respected Library and Information Science programs in Asia. 

SKKU’s location in Seoul, along with the wealth of cultural activities planned for exchange students, provide students with the opportunity to have an immersive cultural experience in one of the world’s largest and most cosmopolitan cities. 

For Exchange or International Summer School:

  • Language requirement: None
  • Minimum class standing requirement: Rising sophomore
  • Minimum GPA requirement:2.7
  • Course Listing(for undergraduate semester)
  • Graduate semesters are handled on a case-by-case basis. Please meet with your SILS advisor or student services manager to discuss course possibilities. Oftentimes, you will work closely with SKKU faculty to develop a schedule which pertains to your specific interests within IS or LS. 

PontificiaUniversidadCatólica de Chile (UC) – Exchange in Santiago, Chile

Courses in Databases, Information Architecture, Information Retrieval, Social Media, and Natural Language Processing, are among a few of the offerings. As a southern hemisphere school, Chile’s semesters run from around February to July and August to December. 

This program is primarily for master’s students.Undergraduates can participate but will not have access to Information Processing and Management courses. With that said, the Engineering school has some undergraduate courses related to Business Intelligence and Data Mining. 

For Exchange:

  • Language requirement: Five semesters of Spanish
  • Minimum class standing requirement: Junior
  • Minimum GPA requirement: 3.0
